The Australian skipper has taken 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chief selector the selector has declared that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest set to start on 21 November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about his chances of taking part.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations involved, not only his injury, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he will feature a significant role. Ideally starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the initial game as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches in any case. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
