A recent study suggests that patients who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People buying such treatments need to be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to starting mass within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally have a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Experts believe the way of the drugs accounts for the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Issue?
Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
People who have come off the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a switch flipping and I was suddenly starving," recalled one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Interest
Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts caution that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural support.
