EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.

  • Approval was given for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans prior to the new year, coinciding with an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to take in dozens of migrants from the US in return for increased assistance, after concluding a formal agreement with US authorities.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit to demand the removal of a political figure’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.
