2K Hires Popular Battle Royale Developer to Revitalize Challenged Hero Shooter Project Ethos

2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to direct the development team at their internal studio, which is currently working on the forthcoming third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.

Management Shift Comes After Poor Reception

Brinkman assumes the leadership position at the development studio following the dismissal of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's disappointing unveiling last fall.

On Wednesday, the company's top executive a key figure updated team members about this organizational change through an official communication, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had indicated the need for a distinct vision.

The president expressed that the developers is now reimagining Project Ethos with a renewed focus, aiming to address player expectations.

Trend of Strategic Recruitment

This announcement mirrors a comparable step taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to assist with the BioShock development group.

Here is the complete text from the president's communication:

Dear Team—

I know you all just completed your town hall - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the positive developments. Last time I sent you all a message, I stated the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most dedicated and innovative designers we have had the opportunity to collaborate with - and we’re looking forward for that relationship to persist.”

With your dedication and flexibility, particularly over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.

The gamer responses from last fall’s Project ETHOS testing phase was revealing. It validated the appeal of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had improvements to make. It uncovered the requirement for a clearer identity.

It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve come. You embraced the criticism to mind and reimagined Project ETHOS with a refreshed goal - one that’s poised to achieve its potential to our audience.

The trust in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To boost the incredible advancement you’ve made, I am thrilled to announce the new hire as the new Studio Head of 31st Union. After a period of discussions, he starts with us on Monday, October 20.

Ben’s leadership and experience in the competitive gaming space is extensive, having dedicated the past decade and a half creating and leading some of the most well-known series in gaming, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, and lately, the battle royale hit.

Please join me in welcoming Ben next week. We are all excited to persist observing the development of the game in the time to come.

The President

Experience of the Incoming Head

Brinkman presently holds the position of senior developer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. He previously worked at Treyarch and Activision in various production roles on the iconic franchise series, and, earlier in his career, had stints at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Title Information and Concept

The upcoming game was announced in October 2024 in conjunction with a public demo. Then, the developers portrayed the title as a "no-cost, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an innovative evolution on the style."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the official summary explains. "Take on the rivals with fresh skills, risks, and obstacles that change every session. Do you safely extract with your collected items? Or take a risk, gamble everything, and pray your group can secure victory? The choice is up to you."

Project Ethos lacks an official debut schedule or consoles, but enthusiasts can expect more updates as development advances.
